Clarity

As a special education teacher, I am very aware of the vulnerability of my students to abuse. When I found out I was having twins and I did research, I found that divorce and abuse are higher in households of multiples. Often the additional stress of a special needs child or multiples causes parents to lash out. But the fact that special needs children are often unable to communicate verbal, sexual or emotional abuse. Add to that their wanting to please and you have a population of potential victims.

Having that in the back of my mind, I wrote "The Secrets We Keep" just as a wake up to keep people aware that it's the kids that hide this as well. The sense of powerlessness and shame make it a difficult secret to share.
